"I started dancing as a child; it was ballet at first. Later I wanted  some social interaction too and ballroom dancing seemed ideal. The real change came when I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. I really believe that dancing was the best rehabilitation which saved me from life in a wheelchair."

"Ballroom dancing is a wonderful part of my life. It makes me happy and has increased my confidence in social situations. It challenges me physically and mentally. It’s a great workout and it feeds my creativity. I have also made so many new friends through ballroom dancing. Great people who have the same aspirations as me in dance and who are fun to be with. There is nothing better than an evening on the dance floor!"

Tanya Desharnais

“I’ve been doing ballroom dancing for a year now. Dancing is good for the soul; it just makes you feel happy! Dancing is a great aerobic activity which helps you improve your coordination, balance, and muscle strength! For older adults, dancing is great for posture and helps strengthen your muscles and spine to keep you erect! It is great exercise for our brains as well. Remembering steps and dance routines is a great challenge for memory! You meet a lot of wonderful like-minded friends at Dance who love to do it as much as you!”

Nancy Polisin

"I ballroom dance because it allows me to express myself to music through the different dances and characterizations of each dance. It's a great form of fun exercise and great discipline. There is always so much to learn. Even at the highest level of dancing you can find different ways to develop and improve yourself. Ballroom dancing also gives me the opportunity to dance with my partner where I have developed my communication not only on a physical level but verbally as well. It's a one of a kind art!"

Klaudia Petriti

"Dancing these last 5 years has given me a sense of achievement, inspiration, and mental stimulation. Each 6 months is a target to prepare to dance on an event which constantly challenges me to improvise and excel, forcing me to engage in teamwork and discipline, stretch my muscles to increase the flexibility and create awareness of each move. It’s a great and stress free way to exercise while socializing with people."

"Ballroom dancing has given me the most pleasure from the corners of my mind to the tips of my toes. It challenges my brain, benefits my body as I attempt to learn and express myself, the variety of music makes my heart sing, and having a partner is a way to meet so many interesting people who share the same interest. For me, it is a 'Fun Challenge.' I Love to Dance, I love to learn and I love to have fun!"

Joan Wright

"Start with one step and learn what fun can be! That’s how I began. I knew nothing about ballroom dancing but once I started I didn’t want to stop. It was the challenge of learning a new way to move my body and ended up improving myself physically, mentally, socially, emotionally and having a ball while doing it. What a fun way to maintain your health (especially as you get older)."

Joan Wright

"When I was still working, my wife gave me a birthday gift certificate for dancing lessons. I found dancing to be great exercise, involving both mind and body, and a welcome diversion from work."

"My husband and I started dancing lessons when our kids were in elementary school. It was the only way we could be together without having our minds totally focused on the children. . . .

That precious one hour a week was our reconnecting time, a 'date' that we badly needed in a relationship stressed by work, finances, and parenthood.

We then realized that dancing demanded a high level of collaboration with our partners than even a normal marriage requires. By pursuing it together my husband and I discovered challenges within ourselves and conquered them as best we can as a team. So, by the time the kids went on to Middle School, High School, and beyond, we were able to really enjoy each other and not suffer any sense of loss with an empty nest.

Now, as we are both retired and getting into the 'really mature' years, we notice how dancing helps us improve our mobility, balance, cardiovascular function, and joint health!!!

Furthermore, dancing brought us a new circle of friends. Dancing friends are supportive, active, and always vying for a good time. There really is no better way to enjoy golden years!"

"Ballroom dancing adds a touch of fun, personal challenge, and intrigue to my life.

Fun:

The music, the environment, the moves, the people all combine to create a fun atmosphere when I am ballroom dancing, whether I am at practice or an event like a showcase.

Personal Challenge:

Learning certain dances like the tango or waltz is intimidating and personally challenging to me. I do not naturally feel comfortable getting into the right position and character to do these dances justice, but being out of my comfort zone has enabled me to grow and build my confidence and be more carefree.

Intrigue:

While I love my work, it’s not the most interesting thing and adding ballroom dancing into my repertoire adds a little spice to my life. There is something to be said about people who participate in ballroom dancing and I enjoy being around them. It’s like carving out a piece of your life that is reserved for fun – there is no stress, everyone is there to have a good time, you are mutually respected, treated with dignity and honor and doing something that is healthy for your mind and body."

"Why we like Ballroom Dancing . . .

Ballroom dance brings exercise and joyful activity . . . dancing together. There is that something special about dancing that leaves you feeling happy and fulfilled after a lesson or workshop.

On top of that, you constantly work on your social skills as you meet a lot of different people with diverse backgrounds and upbringings.

I would recommend ballroom dance to anyone who recovers from physical injury or mental distress/anxiety."
